Welcome to College Avenue Friends Church. We are glad you are interested in learning more about who we are as a worshiping community. We are trying to build strong connections with God, each other, and our world. We believe God's plan for the church is inter-generational; that God is interested in aligning the wisdom of our more seasoned members with the passion and zeal of the younger ones. We are seeking unity among our diversity within the Body of Christ, and feel something is missing when we divide ourselves up too neatly by our similarities. We are committed to keeping Christ at the center of our fellowship, and allowing Him to re-order our lives through the transforming power of the gospel. We hope you will consider experiencing our fellowship and hospitality in person. Quakers might be cooler than you think… We hope you will feel welcome enough to come and find out for yourself.
Who We are
College Avenue Friends Church is a unique Christ centered, Biblically-based body of believers. We are a gathering of Friends who seek to be led by God's Spirit.
College Avenue Friends exists to be compassionate examples of Christ as we live out the Quaker testimonies through the exercise of our individual gifts. We are committed to live as a Christ-centered fellowship which gives freedom to its members to practice their faith as led by God's Spirit.
Our Vision and Values Statements
Gospel Ordered Lives
College Avenue Friends exists to be compassionate examples of Christ bearing God’s message of love to the world with not only our words, but also with our deeds as lived out by the Friends Testimonies of Simplicity, Peace, Integrity, Community, and Equality. We believe we are called to "let our lives speak" as a demonstration and proclamation of the gospel of Jesus Christ.
Connected to Christ
College Avenue Friends exists to be a Christ centered fellowship that stays true to our heritage as Friends. Hence, we are committed to a listening spirituality allowing room for the inward experience of Christ. We believe God’s living Word, Jesus, will always lead us in ways that are consistent with His written word of biblical revelation.
Looking Outward at the World
College Avenue Friends exists not only for its own sake but also for the sake of those outside our walls that Christ calls us to love and serve. We are committed to pushing beyond the status quo and being a light to others in our daily walks of faith.
Anchored to Our Context
College Avenue Friends has always existed to serve as a light to William Penn University including its students, faculty, and destiny as God leads.
College Avenue Friends embraces a spirit of hospitality that shapes our worship. This calls us to an inclusive vision that makes room for new members to find their place in our family and allows them to grow in Christ using their gifts and talents.
One Body, Many Parts
College Avenue Friends embraces the fact that we are an intergenerational church committed to a balanced approach that embraces this diversity in our worship planning for music, preaching, and other worship activities.
College Avenue Friends strives for good stewardship of our gifts and talents, our time and finances, and our energy and creativity. This view of stewardship extends even to the environment God created for us to live in as Ps 24:1 states, "...the earth is the Lord's and everything in it."
It is not about us at College Avenue Friends; it is about God. We worship and connect with God by seeking His face in the present moment. This is something we do together as a worshipping community of the people of God. As Quakers, we believe our lives can glorify God whether in the church building or out in the mundane of normal life. We believe we are called to "let our lives speak" as a demonstration and proclamation of the gospel.
This means worship is more than the spaces between the notes on Sunday morning, but you will find us gathered together for that purpose, singing praises to God with one voice. We are an intergenerational church, with various musical styles and preferences. This means we have a rotation of various song leaders and accompanists, ranging from a monthly "organ" Sunday to a more rock oriented group of young adults. Every week holds something different. Our two main song leaders range from the beautiful and powerful "traditional" to the bluesy and passionate "contemporary." We attempt to walk a middle road between choruses and hymns; one that stretches everyone's generational preferences a little bit, but truly strives for an inclusive vision for musical worship.
We gather together in weekly worship to connect with God and each other and to open our hearts to allow God's truth to speak into our lives. We hope you will join us in praising God together. We typically begin with a call to worship, then sing a few songs, have the pastor bring a message, and close with a time of quiet reflection. People are friendly and low key. There is no dress code per se; come as you are. While some may decide to dress up more than others, most people dress in the semi-casual range. Come join us!
